Grupo Experimental Multidisciplinar Autônomo was conceived by a group of artists as a conceptual framework with which to think about the city of Rio de Janeiro and its environment, both urban and natural.
It was proposed as an interdisciplinary interface: open to collaborative processes which were developed with local and international researchers of arts, sciences and technology.
GEMA was a place in time, where friends met with alot of enthusiasm to think about and design public interventions, it was a space for play and develop a critical view of ourselves in relation to the city: it’s political and social fabric.
The fusion of disciplines matched with the specificity of the neighbourhood, spaces and people we proposed to work with. We allowed ourselves to think playfully and aimed to reach as many participants and audiences both near and overlooked, far and wide.
